1.0 The International Students Cell (ISC) in ANU has the following main activities: 

  • Admissions of international students in University colleges and in affiliated colleges;

  • Online admissions to cater to the needs of those who cannot join in the University / Colleges

  • Centre for foreign languages, to train the students in foreign languages;

  • Design / develop ANU free online courses, on the lines of MOOCs.

  • Collaborations with foreign universities, for jointly offering twinning programs, dual degree programs and integrated degree programs.

ISC is headed by a Director, who is in constant contact with the international institutions/organizations/Universities/ Embassies/Consulates of the foreign countries for providing required information for the benefit of the prospective foreign students. It provides single window system to facilitate the international students with all kinds of services that they require. It deals with the admission and guidance of international students.

1.      International students will be given admission into undergraduate, postgraduate, research and professional courses in the university campus colleges, its postgraduate college at Ongole and also in private affiliated colleges of ANU.

2.      Admission into postgraduate and professional courses will be given in the campus colleges of the university and affiliated colleges where such courses are offered.

3.      Admission into undergraduate courses like BA, B.Com, B.Sc, BBM, BHM etc., will be given only in UG degree colleges affiliated to ANU. 

4.      ISC will also allot foreign students to affiliated colleges for courses like B.Tech, M.Tech, B.Pharm, M.Pharm, MBA, MCA, etc.

It is a host to students studying in various faculties from several foreign countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tanzania, Thailand, Ethiopia, Iraq, Nigeria, Mali, Laos, Vietnam, Libya, USA etc.,.

1.1      In Academic year 2010-11 ISC has given admissions to 27 international students, the admissions increased to 35 in academic year 2011-12, further it increased to 51 in the Academic year 2012-13 and in 2013-14 ISC has given admissions to 151 international students.  In Academic year 2014-15 ISC has given admissions to 192 students from various countries like – Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Tanzania, USA, Laos, Iraq, Ethiopia, Nepal, Nigeria, Mali and Libya.

*At present, the university offers limited Hostel accommodation in the university campus, on “first come first served basis”, at the rate of Rs. 7260/- per person, per year. Such students have to make their own arrangements for food. Those, who wish to have accommodation with all amenities can avail ‘private accommodation’, opposite to Acharya Nagarjuna University, in IJM – Dwaraka Krishna (Malaysian Township).

 1.2 Distance Education Programs with ICT

Acharya Nagarjuna University - a pioneer in the sphere of Higher Education in India, both in the face to face as well as ODL education, has launched  its premium Online Programmes for the benefit and upliftment of the students. Students can now, reap the benefits of higher education from Acharya Nagarjuna University through the “Centre for Online Programmes”.

With an excellence in the field of education accomplished by continuous effort of 38 years, Acharya Nagarjuna University has opened up Distance Mode of Education in the year 2003 and helped lakhs of students to enhance their respective academic qualifications. Now, this is a new initiative converging the latest technological advancements including cloud computing and that of Academic excellence to provide ‘online Education’.

 The course material, replete with video lectures, audio books, textual study material and animated content, created by veteran professors and industry experts, provide the type of interactivity the students have been looking for. The students of these courses will be provided with their unique user Id and passwords, using which the students can access their personalised course pages on the University Learning Management System. The students shall be able to rewind and revise the lectures at their own will.

The University will also be launching its mobile interface which can be downloaded by the students on their smart phones, thereby making m-learning a reality. Students shall be able to access the full course content and also chat with the professors online on their smart phones. The university has also made the provision for the students to avail of the off-line content for their mobile phones. The students shall be able to access the digital content without the need for any Internet connection. This feature of the online program shall be beneficial for the students of the state who hail from remote and far-flung areas with little or no Internet connection. Progress of the students is reviewed, monitored and guided online by way of SMS, e-Mail, IVRS and by a dedicated Call Centre.

The entire process of admission, document verification, payment of fees, approvals and teaching shall be conducted online. Examinations, Assignments, Evaluation, Marks list generation and also the award of the degree is programmed to be online. ANU also is one of the first Indian Govt. Universities to launch the Online Examinations for all its students enrolling for the said courses. The students shall be able to take the tests on their laptops in test centres. The use of technology shall also help the University to assess the students efficiently and to provide prompt mark sheets.

For the conduction of the programs and efficient student support, the University has partnered with Schoolguru Eduserve Pvt Ltd, a specialised Academic Support Services organisation with proven skill set to run and manage online programs for Indian Universities. Schoolguru’s immense experience in architecting and managing Technology in Education and the vast experience of their veteran Academic Board and Council helped the University optimally utilize the technology platform to its advantage. Schoolguru shall provide a large spectrum of specialised services ranging right from advising the selection of the courses, development of the digital video content, providing the Server and hosting infrastructure, hosting the content on the Learning Management Platform, development of the mobile application, process automation, student support services and online examination management for these courses

Schoolguru has brought in the complete technology infrastructure at no Capital Expense to the University. The platform with its ERP, its integrated Learning Managed System and its Mobile Application is rugged, scalable and time tested. With the partnership of Schoolguru, the University is launching 16 online courses with 30 programmes in the first phase.

 AWARDS FOR ANU ONLINE EDUCATION

I: IMC IT AWARD IN THE EDUCATION CATEGORY FOR ANU ONLINE EDUCATION:

ANU Online Education has been awarded IMC IT Award in the Education Category. The Indian Merchant Chambers is a Premier Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry in India and was established in 1907.

The award has been hotly contested and the eminent 7-member jury consists of 5 former chairman of NASSCOM and a former President of CSI. ANU has been selected for the award based on the following criteria:

·         Innovative use of technology to solve a business problem.

·         Use of IT to increase business competitiveness

·         Use of IT to increase efficiency and deliver quantifiable returns to all stakeholders.

The Award Winners have been selected by an eminent panel of Jury including:

Prof. P. Rajasekhar, Registrar, Acharya Nagarjuna University received the award in  award function held at Mumbai on 9-June 2015  at the Palladium Hotel, Lower Parel, Mumbai.

 

II: GLOBAL HR EXCELLENCE AWARD OF “BEST ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM” FOR ANU ONLINE EDUCATION:

Acharya Nagarjuna University Online Programs also won “Best Online Distance Learning Program” at Global HR Excellence Awards held in Mumbai on 15th February 2015. Mr.Shantanu Rooj of Schoolguru Eduserve Pvt.Ltd, Technology Partner of Acharya Nagarjuna University had received the award on behalf of Acharya Nagarjuna University.

The award function (Global HR Excellence Awards, World Education Congress) saw the presence of delegates from about 130 countries across the world. The award was contested in different categories by various organizations and institutions across the world. There were many nominations by many of India's leading universities. However, the award for the Best Online Distance Learning Program was conferred upon Acharya Nagarjuna University.

The learned jury members found merit in the contribution that Acharya Nagarjuna University Online Programs was making to the corporate world. The compete spoke elaborately about the initiatives of the University and how this learning platform, coupled with the Online examinations, was proving to be extremely beneficial to the corporate world. They also spoke about the variety of courses that the University offers and how the mobile platform is transforming ease of learning.

 

1.3 Acharya Nagarjuna University Free Online Courses (ANU MOOCs)

Acharya Nagarjuna University has taken measures to design/develop MOOCs in ANU and has authorized the Director ISC to work on the project and required facilities are provided to develop free online courses.

Salient features of ANU MOOCs:

1.      Title of the Project : The initiative  be called as  “MOOCs” ,  to be developed on the lines of Reputed world class universities like Harvard , MIT etc.

2.      Who will develop the courses: The Faculty members form ANU and its affiliated colleges will be trained and motivated to develop ANU Online courses. Efforts of Faculty members will be channeled through Nodal office at ISC and interested faculty members will be asked to register their proposals, to avoid duplication of effort.  The content given by the faculty members will be divided into number of small modules and presentation tools like PPTs, Audio/ video mixing will be provided by the facilities available in ISC online education and also in the Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication. The final version of the content will be evaluated/ certified by subject experts and language editors and then only it will be placed in University Website for free access to anyone, anytime, like any other MOOCs.

3.      For whom: The courses will cover all faculties and are offered free of cost to all to learn the subject. Those who want ANU certification will be required to pay Rs 500 for Indian students from within the country or US$ 20 for all international Students.

4.      Procedure to be followed by students: Interested students are required to register online for the selected course(s) in the university website/ ISC website and after successful registration every user will be given a user name and password for accessing the courses.

5.      Assigning credits to online courses: At present all PG courses in ANU are offered through CBCS and in case of two year PG courses, every student has to select any course from the list of approved noncore papers during II and III semesters.

 Now the students may be asked to take MOOCs for Noncore papers in II and III semesters. The University will decide the number of credits to be allotted for that course depending on the coverage of syllabus.

6.      Evaluation and Certification:    the content developer must also develop question bank in the form of MCQs along with the course content for the purpose of evaluation.  The built in mechanism in the software will enable the generation of question paper and system will itself evaluate the performance and result will be displayed instantaneously without human intervention.  System generated Certification or hard copy of certification may be issued by the university with the signature of authorized authority of the university.

7.      Time line:  Some of the courses can be offered w.e.f., 1st, September, 2015.

 1.4 Foreign Collaborations

As a measure of strengthening the International Collaboration, the University has signed an MOU with University of West Georgia and in the process of signing another MOU with Fort Valley State University, Georgia, USA.

The following Courses are being offered under this collaborative initiative:

1.      Students admitted to First Year M.Sc. (Bio-Technology) in ANU can pursue Second year in Fort Valley State University to obtain M.S (Bio-Technology).

2.      Students admitted to First Year MBA in ANU can pursue Second year in Fort Valley State University to obtain MBA.

3.      Students admitted to First Year M.B.A in ANU can pursue Second year in Richards College of Business in University of West Georgia to obtain M.B.A.

Students would get enormous benefits, by way of Expenditure reduction to just One Year study in USA and also by way of Fee Concession offered by some Universities. The Partner Universities of US have agreed further to consider incentives and scholarships to students on their performance. It is worthwhile to note that Universities in US are accepting the standards of ANU for the proposed courses by taking the Credits awarded by ANU in First Year.  It is hoped that this kind of an innovative scheme offered by ANU would be taken up in the right spirit by students of the area to get the benefits of obtaining US degree studying first year in ANU and second year in US University.

 Collaboration with East African Statistical Training Center (EASTC), Tanzania

Prof. K.R.S.Sambasiva Rao, Rector, ANU, and Prof. V.Chandrasekhara Rao, Director, ISC, ANU, visited EASTC on 05-02-2015, and signed an MOU with EASTC, for the promotion of the following activities:

1.      Offer Joint post graduate courses in Statistics and MBA.

2.      Exchange of teaching and research personnel.

3.      Cooperative development of courses and academic programs.

4.      Development of joint scientific and / or technological research projects.

5.      Any other activity of mutual interest regarding academic, scientific and technological research matters.

Prof. K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, Vice-Chancellor (I/C), Acharya Nagarjuna University, and             Prof. I. Ngalinda, Rector, EASTC, Tanzania, signed specific Service Level Agreements (SLA) on        19-05-2015, for offering Ph.D. in Statistics with immediate effect and Ph.D. in Management, Economics and Computer Applications soon. They also signed SLA for offering Masters Programs in Management, Economics, and Computer Applications w.e.f., in the Academic Year 2015-16, in EASTC campus, Tanzania.

ANU and EASTC has also signed academic collaborations in the following programs:

1.      Twining programs- Under twining programs the student shall study the first year in either of the countries and the second year in the other country.  Degree will be awarded jointly by both the institutions after the successful completion of the course.  

2.      Dual Degree programs - ANU and EASTC agreed to offer 5 years Integrated Master’s programs in Dual Degree mode. Under this scheme the students shall study the first three years in either of the countries and the remaining two years in the other country. Bachelors Degree will be awarded on completion of the first three years by the University/Institute where the student studied.  Master’s Degree will be awarded on successful completion of latter two years of study by the respective University/Institution.

3.      Online Programs: ANU and EASTC agreed to jointly promote Online Courses that are being offered by ANU Online and International Students Cell of ANU for the benefit of the Students of Tanzania particularly to those who wish to enhance their respective Academic Qualification but cannot join a regular Teaching Institution to pursue Higher Studies.

4.      Language programs: ANU and EASTC agreed to jointly promote the Certificate Course in Communicative (Language) in Collaboration with EASTC. The Language very widely spoken by major ethnic population of Tanzania and several East African and South African countries being “Kiswahili” and the other Languages popularly spoken are English, Arabic and French. 

5.      Skill Development Programs: ANU proposes to offer Certificate Programs, Diploma Programs and Post Graduate Diploma Programs in different Skills in relation to Software, Computer Technology, Mobile Technology, Gaming and such other Employability Skills to supplement the Economic Development of African Youth and Women, by customizing to suit to the identified needs of Tanzania.

Dr.Frank A.E. Mkumba and Dr.Tumaini M Katunzi, Deputy Rectors from EASTC visited ANU during 03rd to 05th June, 2015 and interacted with the faculty of Management, Statistics, Computers and Economics.  The Department of Management, Computers and Statistic have signed individually “Operational Procedures Agreement” with EASTC, Tanzania for offering MBA, MCA and Ph.D. in Statistics courses in EASTC, Tanzania from the academic year 2015-16. 

 1.3 CENTRES FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGES (CFL)

As per the suggestions and direction of Government of Andhra Pradesh, Acharya Nagarjuna University has started Center for Foreign Languages and identified ten International Languages which has great opportunities for further studies and for employment to the students of Andhra Pradesh in various ventures to be taken up by MNCs in the development of new Capital region of new Andhra Pradesh state.  The CFL in International Students Cell offers the following courses:

9.      Kiswahili (African Language)

Level of introduction:   ANU has taken initiatives to introduce Japanese language as one of the second languages at UG level  / and as one of the paper in the course curriculum of  B.Tech  and MBA programs and  to offer as a functional/communicative language to  interested candidates in ANU campus and other students of local colleges.

 Course Details: 

1.      Certificate of Proficiency Courses (COP) will be offered at basic level in all the ten courses as an initial step. 

2.      At a later stage Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Foreign Languages as per the UGC guidelines and also European frame work of three levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. 

3.      There will be 40% for internal assessment and 60% for the term end examination.

4.      Attendance for learning any Foreign Language will be compulsory.

5.      The fee would be: Rs.200/- towards registration and Rs.1000/- towards tuition fee and Rs.200/- for examination per semester for general category students with 50% of concession for SC/ST students for COP courses. 

Expected benefits / outcomes of introduction of Japanese course:

The University expects to create immediate employment opportunities to B.Tech / MBA students by introducing the Japanese language as a one semester course during the first semester of final year B.Tech / MBA courses during 2015-16.  Learning Arabic language can fetch jobs in Gulf / Middle East.  Similarly proficiency in African language Kiswahili) will help our students to get jobs in Tanzania, Ethiopia and other African Countries.
