Acharya Nagarjuna University is one of the pioneering institutions in South India to initiate teaching and Research in Archaeology particularly in Prehistory. Eminent scholars like Prof. R. Subramanyam, Prof. D. Bhaskara Murthi, Prof. B. Rajendra Prasad, Prof. B.R. Subramanyam, Prof. Y. Kumara Swamy, Prof. P. Rama Laxmi, Prof. B. David Raju, Prof. V. Madhu Sudhana Rao, Prof. V. Anuradha in the Department. Department of Archaeology was established in 1971 and History was added in 1985, offering M.A. Ancient History and Archaeology, M.A. History and Research. The Department has explored number of Pre Historic sites in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Few Pre Historic and Historic Excavations were also carried out by the Department
1. Conducted excavations at Nambur, Kambampadu, Tellapadu, Gandlur and salvage operations at Srisailem submergible area.
2. Conducted explorations and brought to light several paleolich, Neolithic and Megalithic sites.
3. Several Epigraphs and Temples were brought to light.
4. Services of many personalities and organisations are brought into limelight.
5. Contributiions of women and dalits are focussed on. 6. Work on Church Histories is going on .
